“How do I join WSJU Radio?”

If you would like to join WSJU Radio, come visit us in Marillac Hall rm. 424 when we open in September. We also accept new members all throughout the semester, so please feel free to speak to one of our staff members at the station.

“What are the requirements?”

WSJU Radio is a St. John’s University co-curricular organization that is open to ALL St. John’s University full-time undergraduate and pharmacy students. You must have a GPA of 2.0 or higher, and meet the WSJU requirements for membership.

“Do I have to be a Communications Major to join WSJU?”

No, you do not have to be a Communications Major to  join WSJU. In fact, only a small percentage of our members are Communications Majors.

“What kind of positions are open at WSJU?”

The staff members of WSJU radio change on an annual basis. Since only current students of St. John’s University are allowed to be members, we often lose members due to graduation or transfers out of the university. Therefore, the process of electing new members to staff positions is a rolling process. WSJU Radio is always looking for new members to fill in every position - NO POSITIONS are permanent.

“What do the staff members mean when they say: ‘there is a job for everyone’?”

When we say “there is a job for everyone,” we mean just that. You do not have to be a board member of WSJU radio to be a part of our important daily operations and routine station activities. Our board members and general members will always find a way for you to take part in working at WSJU Radio. Along with that, you can also become a member and receive training for any and every position on our board.

“Can I make requests?”

Yes, all of our DJs would be more than happy to take your requests. We would also be happy to “shout out” people on air as well as make song dedications for you.

“Do I have to go on air to make a request?”

No, when we first receive your call it is off-air. We understand not all listeners want to go on air, therefore we can play the request without putting you on the air. Should you want to be on air, please ask the DJ hosting the current show.

“Can I make a request via telephone?”

Yes, you can call us at 718-990-6126. (Please note: if your call is not immediately answered, please try back shortly after. Our DJ or On-Air Personality might be LIVE on air when you call.

“How else can I request a song?”

You can also request a song on AIM. Our screen name is WSJUradio.

“Do you take e-mail requests?”

No, we cannot check our e-mail accounts frequently, so it is best to call or instant-message us your request.

“Is my song guaranteed to be played?”

Depending on the song you request, our DJs will try their hardest to process your request. If the request you have does not fit in with the theme or rotation of the current show, we will leave your request with the appropriate show.

“Do I have to listen using Windows Media Player?”

WSJU’s internet broadcast stream is programmed to open in your default audio player. These are often set to programs such as Windows Media Player and iTunes. You may set other programs to be your default media players to listen to WSJU.

“Is it true that you are on 590 AM?”

In previous years, our logo for WSJU contained “590 AM.” The reason for this was because in some spots on the Queens campus, WSJU was available through a signal on 590 AM.

Today, however, WSJU primarily focuses on our three main broadcasting areas: WSJUradio.org, Marillac Cafeteria, and on Channel 36 in the residence village.

WSJU does not have any connection to 590 AM, though we are attempting to be broadcast over the radio in Queens.

“Why are you sometimes turned off in Marillac Cafeteria?”

Marillac Cafeteria is the hosting location of many events throughout the academic year. If there is ever a time where WSJU is not broadcasting in Marillac Cafeteria, it is because there is either an event taking place or because preparations are being made for an event in Marillac Cafeteria. Our feed to Marillac Cafeteria is under the main control of  the department of Public Safety.

“What kind of music do you play?”

WSJU is a variety college radio station. We do not strictly stick to one specific format. We have seven different Music Departments: Alternative, Blend, Jam, Latin, Loud Rock, Urban, and Reggae.

“What are the rules and regulations you follow on-air?”

WSJU Radio is a college radio station. Our on-air format, content, and ethics follow those of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). We also broadcast while keeping in mind that St. John’s University is a Catholic Vincentian University. We do not broadcast any content that goes against the beliefs or opinions of St. John’s University and the mission our University follows. Our content is also based on the regulations set forth by the St. John’s University office of the Dean of Student Life.

“How can I send my demo to WSJU?”

WSJU Music Department is dedicated to discovering new artists. Under the leadership of our two music directors, our six genre directors would be more than happy to listen your your demos or albums.

Please send your music to the appropriate director. You can find the correct department to e-mail on our Contact Us page.  You will also find all of our information about mailing us CDs or Demos. Please do not e-mail us music files for internet safety & security reasons.

“What do I send with my demo?”

To speed up the process of reviewing your music, please include your CD of your demo, a sheet of information about your band including:

- artist name

1. -genre you would like to be added to
   

2. -your label or distributor
   

3. -any other information we should know about the artist
   

4. -a lyrics sheet
   

“Can my music get played on WSJU?”

Once our music department has received your demo CD, the decision to add your music to rotation and the length of time to keep your music on rotation is solely up to that department’s director.

Your music must also fit our content requirements to be considered for airtime.

“I am a resident student, why can’t I get channel 36?”

If you are living on campus and your television does not tune to that channel, please make sure all connections on your TV are correct. Also, if your TV was previously used before connecting to the St. John’s service, make sure Ch. 36 is not set to be skipped when channel tuning. If you can not receive channel 36 for an extended period of time, please e-mail us at programming@wsjuradio.org.

The feed for channel 36 comes directly from our station in Marillac Hall. However, the television service in the residence village is operated by Time Warner Cable. Should channel 36 not be functioning properly, please check in later as it could be temporarily turned off for technical service reasons by Time Warner.
